5:00 pm
his family is staying positive and we believe he'll come home soon. >> one works as a veterinary cardiologist in vienna. >> he is very well liked by everybody that works with him and all of our clients. we've had a huge outpouring of support because of the person he is. >> reporter: the two went to school together at virginia tech. they went hiking and were expected to fly home on friday but never boarded the plane. after the two men were reported missing, their car was found in the park. there is already snow at high altitudes, whether conditions have hampered the search. you can see the thick fog in this photo snapped today by a webcam in a spot in the park near what is called two medicine. they have not been since
5:01 pm
tuesday. >> this morning the weather wasn't good and it did break. >> reporter: a fire ring is believed to be left behind by the hikers. both men are married and peckens has a young child. >> now back here at home, friends are putting together a web page to raise money for the search. so far $15,000 has been pledged. to find the link go to our website at myfoxdc.com. >> hopefully that $15,000 will go a long way. beth parker, thank you. >> and now to a disturbing news alert out of montgomery county, maryland. police arrested an 18-year-old for stabbing a classmate in the leg at northwood high school in silver spring. the 15-year-old victim had minor injuries. investigators believe the incident stemmed from a fight. the trial of two police officers accused of beating a student is underway. it happened back in 2010
5:02 pm
following a student riot in college park after a maryland basketball game. prosecutors say the beating was an abuse of power but the officers say they acted lawfully. paul is live with the latest. paul? >> reporter: well, shawn, in many respects this trial really comes down to who you believe and what took place in that video. were the police actually taking part in police brutality and it was john mckenna, the student beaten by the police, was he the aggressor who was threatening to the police. all of that played out in court today. we did he hear from john mckenna and the lawyer who's are representing the police officers who have been charged with assault and misconduct in office. and a lot of what happened that night played out in court today. john mckenna took the stand and told the court he was celebrating maryland's win over duke and had no intention of getting into any trouble when
5:03 pm
he was hit by riot police and arrested. he said he was skipping down the sidewalk singing the notre dame fight song when he looked up and saw police on horseback. he told the court he had not heard any announcements to disburse and the officers on knox road said nothing before he was hit to the shield and knocked to the ground. the now 24-year-old doesn't remember being hill but just remembered being thrown into a wagon and received a wound to his head. another student, nathan cole took the stand and say he video taped part of the incident. footage shown to the jury which included audio of someone singing the fight song. mckenna skipped down the sidewalk and never confronted police. joseph rutty told the court that the two officers on trial abused their power and must be held accountable. but defense attorneys both told
5:04 pm
the jury the officers didn't know if mckenna was an aggressive agitator, perhaps high on drugs or drunk sand disobeying police act. they called it police authority not brutality. mckenna suffered a concussion that night. he said he was drinking that night but does not remember after being hit by the shield on knox road. the officers say based upon their -- what the lawyers told the jury, that they were operating within their training and that they are certainly not criminals. back to you. >> paul wagner. it will come down to the tape. thank you. >> turning to weather. after a gorgeous weekend, kind of a mixed bag today. the temperatures mild but it has been a gray and damp day with heavy rain in some places. let's join gary mcgrady for a
5:05 pm
quick look at the day. hey, gary. >> will, we'll look quickly to radar because we doing have more rain coming through. some of this looked to be maybe some thunderstorm activity but i have not seen any lightning out of this. nothing right now so much over the district. but as we get tighter here, just north of the district, north of the beltway, this is just to the west of i-95, colesville, it is moving off to the east and northeast and so eventually it will get over to beltsville, and cloverly having heavy rain and eventually across i-95. there is a larger line back out to the west and southwest and this is moving in our direction as well. it is moving into northern sections of fauquier county and moving out of page county and ward county. all of this is ahead of a frontal system and i want to
5:06 pm
show you the bigger picture with the satellite radar. you can see the showers, again potentially thunderstorms in here as well even though i'm not seeing lightnings. the returns were fairly strong and dynamic so i have to believe that eventually there will be lightning and thunder out of this. it will continue to sweep across with the cold front and as the cold front comes through this evening, this is all going to get better. and as we get tighter here, you can see how everything is moving to the east and northeast. brief heavy rain coming through. it is not a threat for severe. you may get gusty wind, maybe lightning and thunder and that is about it. it will quickly move out of here. improving conditions overnight tonight and it looks like again for tomorrow we'll have a taste of fall in the air. we'll have the full forecast coming up. >> gary, thank you. we'll see you in about 10 minutes. >> i don't know about you, but i can still feel. it all of washington is abuzz over rookie qb robert griffin
5:07 pm
iii and his performance over the vikings. we have more on rg3 and the skins big win. i think everything is still riding high today off of that. >> especially that fan who he lant -- he landed into. >> we saw it yesterday, the guy who was drafted number two overall, it is one of the game's best weapons and whether he is throwing for 300 yards or running for 100 yards, rg3 at his best forces opposing defenses to pick their poison. and coming off of last week's concussion, griffin didn't show any signs. in fact he came out with the opposite, he racked up 138 yards on the ground and ran for a pair of touchdowns. the qb actually rushed for the second most yards in the nfl on sunday. he's a quarterback. this was the big one right here. this is a 76-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. he and michael vick are the only two qbs to rush for more
5:08 pm
than 130-yards in a game since the merger back in 1970. this is the big run. shana hab expects the defenses to honor his arm and most certainly his legs. >> any time you have a quarterback that has a threat of making a play with his legs, a lot of time you have defense spying the quarterback. they want to play man coverage but they don't want to rush everybody because they have to account for the quarterback. just like we saw yesterday. he breaks the scrimmage and he runs. >> i just took off running and the rest is history. i got to enjoy the moment for a little bit. it was fun to hear the crowd and see my teammates on the side lines when i made the touchdown. >> everybody was telling him slide, slide. and everybody goes, keep going, keep going. he's so dynamic.
5:09 pm
so many things to worry about with him and he's just amazing. >> so rg3's two touchdowns on sunday and more touchdowns in a season and on track to break the record set by cam newton from last season. so at this pace maybe 16 touchdowns, who knows. >> i remember during his preseason press conference said did you feel like you have to live up to cam newton and he said no, i'm not trying to be cam newton, i'm trying to be robert griffith iii. >> and people were saying on the side lines, they could feel the wind go by. >> what did you say? the most rushing yards? >> yes. >> fantastic, scott. >> and coming up we'll talk with the family who got this unexpected visit from rg3 in
5:10 pm
the end zone and became a part of what they are not now call this, the landover leap. that's coming up at 5:45 so stick around. the space shuttle endeavor has arrived and we'll have details on the long journey tonight. >> and round two, the presidential debates is almost upon us. they face off tomorrow in new york. we'll have a live update from hofstra university as we continue here at 5:00. [ female announcer ] as you're making your decision...
5:11 pm
maybe you're wondering what to believe about mitt romney. well, when it comes to protecting your access to birth control... and the basic women's health care services planned parenthood provides... one thing we must remember, is this:
5:12 pm
i'll cut off funding to planned parenthood. [ female announcer ] he'll cut it off. cut us off. planned parenthood. we're going to get rid of that. [ female announcer ] women need to know the real mitt romney. [ obama ] i'm barack obama and i approve this message. we've got 23 million people out of work or stopped looking for work. they're suffering in this country. the president would prefer raising taxes. the problem with raising taxes is that it slows down the rate of growth. i'm not going to raise taxes on anyone, because when the economy's growing slow like this, when we're in recession you shouldn't raise taxes on anyone. my plan is to bring down rates to get more people working. my priority is putting people back to work in america. i'm mitt romney and i approve this message.
5:13 pm
>> preparations are under way at hofstra university in new york for the second debate between president obama and mitt romney. both candidates have been preparing for tomorrow's contest that will feature a town-hall style format. tom fitzgerald has been falling this one. so fitz, who is facing the bigger challenge tomorrow? i think you could make a good argument for either one. >> clearly all eyes are going to be on president obama following what he himself has joked as a less than top performance in the first debate. mitt romney on the other hand is hoping to repeat the performance from that first debate which helped him pull into a tie in many polls we're looking at today. unlike the last debate where the candidates stood at podiums, this time both president and mitt romney will have to speak directly to voters and answer their questions in a semi-circular
5:14 pm
lay-up. stakes are high for both candidates with steven hess of the brookings institute telling us he expects president obama to put on a stronger showing and should enter the debate with high expectations. >> now the shoe is on the other foot. now he has to worry to living up to expectations and so the next day's story is not just obama did better, we expect that, but that romney fell back. so he's got his own scale that he has to move up. >> well president obama practiced for the first debate out in las vegas but spent his time this weekend prepping in williamsberg, virginia. mitt romney kept his rehearsal sessions in the same place, in the state of massachusetts, and after tomorrow there is one more presidential debate on monday, october 22nd in florida. right now we want to head up to hofstra university on long
5:15 pm
island in new york. we bring in joe waldman from wnyw. how are you? >> feeling pretty great. >> give folks a preview of what they are looking at tomorrow night. >> well, i'll tell you what, first of all for the people in d.c., we are 30 miles east of new york city, east of manhattan in a place called hempstead, in long island. and right now the hall is under preparation and it looks like things are good to go. we are expecting about 80-84 uncommitted voters, voters who haven't decided yet who they are voting for or have an idea but can still be swayed one way or another. so those 80 - 84 people, you'll see them on stage tomorrow night with the candidates behind them, since they are doing the last minute preps, they say between 80-84 and not
5:16 pm
giving a specific number. hofstra is holding this debate in the second time as as -- in as many election sickles. and the president said it went so well the first time around that the presidential commission on debates decided to come back here for the second presidential election in a row and that's why they are doing it here. >> well, joe, we know these uncommitted voters are going to be giving the questions and we know this pool has been drown around from the area where you are. but folks might off-handedly thinking the state is overwhelming for the president. but there are pockets in long island where republicans are quite strong. what doing we know about the folks on the stage tomorrow night and are they keeping that under lock and key? >> right now, that is pretty much being held under lock and key. what we know, which is no surprise, is new york is really a blue state, not considered a swing state like in ohio or
5:17 pm
virginia, florida, one of those states. but nonetheless, people here watched the first debate and the reaction was overwhelmingly the same, which i think it was nationally, which is the president did not come out so strongly. and even the students here seemed to keep a close eye on that debate and new yorkers as a whole are upset with the unemployment figures and some of the other foreign policy issues that we are hearing about right now as well. and i think generally speaking the collective feeling here is that they want to see what both sides have to say and want to see if mr. obama can come out this time around and stir things up, which, again, a lot of the experts say he couldn't doing the first time around. >> joe wal binn from wnyw fox 5 in new york. and again this is a semi- circular town hall meeting. it will be interesting to see whether or not the president can turn around the debate from the first contest. >> it will be interesting to
5:18 pm
see if that changes the dynamics. fitz, i know you'll be all over it. we'll see then. and we want to hear from you. use the hash tag to fox 5 for tomorrow night's debate. and we'll use some of your tweets for a new show, that will focus on national candidates and issues. it starts on monday at 6:30 here on fox 5. >> wow, isn't that just a beautiful shot right there tonight? >> that is gorgeous. it is sort of like now the rain has passed by and this section of the sky. >> we did have a weird day. it came out gray and then the sun came out. what can we expect tonight? >> another day with temperatures up over 70. not for everybody. but here in the city we made it up to 70 and temperatures still
5:19 pm
holding at 70 degrees right now. we look back to the radar here because we still doing have showers in the area and officially now i see thunderstorms too farther down to the south and west. not what you are seeing right now that is passing jut to the north -- just to the north of the district across -- well just now moving into extreme northern prince george's county and anne arundel county and some wind and gusty rin. and into the southwest, let's zoom into that, because now we are getting lightning towards culpeper and northern sections of fauquier count, rappahanock county. i think this gets through prince william county and probably crosses across i-95 there south of the city. again, heavy rain and gusty wind and lightning and thunder right now as well. frontal system is just to the west of the district right now. can i lay it on for you. i'm already beginning to see a
5:20 pm
wind change in our northwestern neighborhoods near frederick county and western loudoun county, winds are switching to the northwest behind the front and temperatures will cool down as well. in terms of the temperatures, let me show you real quickly, 61 for gaithersburg. dulles 63. scatters showered at 7:00. showers east of us at 9:00 and then partly cloudy, breezy at 11:00. full forecast coming up, as i mentioned from the front, we'll have fall weather coming our way for a little while. >> gary, thank you. >> following breaking news out of ohio. a motorcade escorting michelle obama was involved in a crash around 4:00 this afternoon in delaware, ohio, that is near columbus. the fox affiliate there is reporting the crash involved two law enforcement officials on motorcycles. we understand they have now been rushed to the hospital but we are told mrs. obama was not hurt. we'll have much more on this coming up here on fox 5. >> we'll stay on top of that story. >> and also coming up on fox 5
5:21 pm
news at 5:00, a u.s. airways flight diverted because of a cracked windshield. >> and a record-breaking sky dive from the edge of space. this is nothing short of a miracle. details on an amazing fete as we continue. >> and if you have a story idea, we want it. we can put it on air. call the fox 5 tip line or lay it all out in an e-mail at fox 5 tips at wttg.com. [ male announcer ] president obama says he's creating jobs,
5:22 pm
but he's really creating debt. the facts are clear. obama's four deficits are the four largest in us history. he's adding almost as much debt as all 43 previous presidents -- combined. and over 30 cents of every dollar obama spends is borrowed. much of it from countries like china. he's not just wasting money, he's borrowing it and then wasting it. we can't afford four more years. [ romney ] i'm mitt romney and i approve this message.
5:23 pm
dit's just that simple, i mean, needit's a no brainer.and. anncr: every year marylanders spend five hundred and fifty... million at casinos in west virginia, delaware... and pennsylvania. one west virginia paper calls it a "cash cow" for them.
5:24 pm
but its cost maryland over one billion dollars. money that could have created good jobs and... better schools for us. question seven keeps maryland money in maryland. david smallwood: question seven, i think it will be a... good thing for the state of maryland. >> mission accomplished. space shuttle endeavor is at the final resting place but the trip took longer than expected. it arrived at the california science center in los angeles on sunday. this was the culmination of a 12-mile journey through city streets in front of thousands of onlookers. organizers had planned a slow, final voyage about 2 miles per hour but the shuttle moved at a slower pace due to obstacles
5:25 pm
like trees and light posts. we're hearing from the man who broke the sound barrier. australian daredevil felix baumgartner jumped from a balloon near the edge of space and spent several minutes in free fall before landing with the help of a parachute. his body traveled at speeds, get this, just under 834 miles per hour. >> let me tell you, when i was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble. you do not think about breaking records any more, you do not think about gaining scientific data, you just want to come back alive because you do not want to die in front of your parents, your girlfriend and all of the people watching this. >> pretty incredible. you can see him literally tumbling into the akron's atmosphere. he is now the first man to shatter the sound barrier without using a jet or spacecraft. and the man who made the highest jump ever. >> amazing. >> a u.s. airways flight was
5:26 pm
forced to make a precautionary landing because of a cracked windshield. take a look at this. the pilots noticed the crack shortly after takeoff. the flight was headed it phoenix but pilots diverted to albuquerque, new mexico. they lands without any problems but it is under investigation. the numbers are in and americans are shopping more. retail sales were up last month. but some experts warn that may not stick. >> also coming your way, the number of meningitis cases across the country continues to grow. what you need to know, just ahead. the facts are clear. obama's four deficits are the four largest in us history. he's adding almost as much debt as all 43 previous presidents -- combined. and over 30 cents of every dollar obama spends is borrowed. much of it from countries like china. he's not just wasting money, he's borrowing it and then wasting it.

infringement on our lives.s like such an... [ romney ] i'm mitt romney how dare they step into my life that way. it's none of their business. he's trying to restrict us, again. he's taking us backwards. george allen is the last thing we need in washington. anncr: the democratic senatorial campaign committee is... responsible for the content of this advertising. marywe invest in them.umber one in america because but we can do even more. every year marylanders spend five hundred and fifty million dollars at casinos in other states. question 7 keeps that maryland money in maryland through expansion of gaming in maryland. it will mean hundreds of millions of dollars for our schools. as governor, i can promise you, that money will go to education. that's the law and that's what we'll do.
5:29 pm
vote for question seven. a family can make... realizing a nursing home is the only choice. for many middle class families, medicaid is the only way to afford the care. but as a governor, mitt romney raised nursing home fees eight times. and as president, his budget cuts medicaid by one-third and burdens families with the cost of nursing home care. we have a president who won't let that happen. [ obama ] i'm barack obama and i approved this message. >> americans open their wallets a little wider last month. in fact positive numbers from the commerce department shows retail spending is up. so what exactly are people buying and what does it all mean for our economic outlook? laura evans is here with more. >> reporter: well, shawn,
5:30 pm
retail sales in the u.s. jumped 1.1% in september. sales rose in most category but the biggest industry was electronics, like the ipad and the new iphone 5. but some economists are saying don't be too quick to celebrate just yet. although many retailers like best buy are using this opportunity to take those numbers and run. they are saying get shoppers off the computer and into our stores. >> how are you doing? >> looking for a tv. >> i have a new tv we are showing off. >> reporter: ringing up the sales in september. they are up at gas stations, a reflection of higher prices at the pump, car sales are up and even sales at food and beverage stores. electronic stores saw the biggest jump of all, up 4.5%. economists from george mason university say this may reveal nothing about the economy other
5:31 pm
than simply the timing. the buying for back to school and the releasing of the iphone 5. >> so you may have a bump, like suddenly you have a birth driven but a variety of things but they are not going to be sustained. >> positive sales are confused for a reflection of consumer confidence. >> retail sales, they are not driving the economy. it is like the economy drives retail sales and if you don't have sustained growth, especially long-term sustained growth, retailers will not be sustained. >> reporter: now many are going after the online shopper who used the brick and mortgagor store as a showroom. they are also offering free home delivery for items out of the stock in the orders. the goal is to get the shopper leaving best buy with
5:32 pm
merchandise in hand. in the end the consumer is the winner. >> this is the beauty of the market which works in favor of consumers. it is a very good sign to see that best buy is trying to adjust and adapt to competition. >> now just a little tip for you here. at best buy today, we could not find any signs promoting this online deal matching offer they have going. so you doing have to ask. if it were me i would even call ahead to ask. if you find something on online, a deal online that you want them to match, you might call ahead. as for the big picture takeaway, they say holiday sales are good, they always are, but looking ahead to the future and the economic outlook for 2012 and 2013, it is said not to look great. unfortunately the uncertainty is for here and it is for the unforeseeable future. shawn, back to you. >> laura evans. thank you. >> banks sending out notices to customers who may have been

under the president's policies, middle income americans have been buried. they're just being crushed. middle-income americans have seen their income come down by $4,300. this is a tax in and of itself. i'll call it the economy tax. i'm not going to raise taxes on anyone. my plan is to bring down rates to get more people working. my priority is putting people back to work in america. i'm mitt romney and i approve this message.

5:43 pm
if mitt romney wins, the middle class loses. priorities usa action is responsible for the content of this advertising. but to me, it's money that i earned. man: to some people, social security is just a number. i count on social security. and i don't want washington politicians like george allen... privatizing it. if george allen wants to risk his own money on wall street... that's fine. but i don't want him risking mine. george allen just isn't watching out for us. anncr: the democratic senatorial campaign committee is... responsible for the content of this advertising. we've got 23 million people out of work or stopped looking for work. they're suffering in this country. the president would prefer raising taxes. the problem with raising taxes is that it slows down the rate of growth. i'm not going to raise taxes on anyone, because when the economy's growing slow like this, when we're in recession you shouldn't raise taxes on anyone. my plan is to bring down rates to get more people working.

5:51 pm
up on our accu-weather seven- day forecast. great shot. we are looking out here and you can see the sun going down and the sunburst. and i thought it was a flash of lightning but it is the tower blinking off in the distance there. let me show you what is going on. where we have showers and thunderstorms too. because this down here to the south west of us, thunderstorms. nothing in the district now. but the way this is coming together back out to the west of us, and it is moving in our direction, i have to believe that over the next hour, hour and a half or so, this is going to cruise on across. we zoom down into fauquier county and down to opal, remmington, and up to manassas. this all has a history of lightning and thunder as well and some gusty winds coming out of this as well as heavy rain. this will continue to move on off to the east at about 15-20 miles per hour and again, good rain here moving into manassas now. heaviest of the rain has moved through warrenton and opal and

remmington but heading over to calverton. and eventually this is coming over and then we have a spot firing up around springfield franconia. so i think sue will zoom on down to the district for us here. and so you have that spot south of the beltway there. and then the other one that is cruising through just north of largo now, and that is headed outside of the beltway to the east of us, running along 50 there. so i think bowie will get something, and crofton, and that is showing like some thunderstorm activity as well. we'll just keep an eye on this as it keeps on moving through the area. it is all in advance of the frontal system, that is south of bowie know, and the rain has moved through there. and quickly the cooler temperatures in the wake of this front. dulles 63, frederick is 64. we have cooled down to 66.
5:53 pm
scattered showers east of us by 9:00. and then we are partly cloudy around here about 11:00. here is all of the rain, the thunderstorms moving through now. the frontal system is coming on by and in the wake of this front say goodbye to the 70s because it will be very fall- like again for tomorrow. overnight tonight, 52. cooler in the suburbs. we are talking about 40s and it will be breezy. high temperatures tomorrow, lower to mid-60s. we start off chilly and we'll be breezy at noontime. the wind will calm down a little bit toward the latter part of the afternoon. we'll have a good amount of sunshine. as mentioned before, your fox 5 accu-weather seven-day forecast, it is almost hard to believe when you put a seven- day forecast here, out of the seven days you just have one day with some rain and then you have three days with temperatures 70-plus. one day with temperatures in the upper 60s. so it really looks good for the next several days. i hope that holds because it is monday. of course we already care about the weekend.
5:54 pm
>> of course. >> don't you wake up on monday thinking about the weekend. i know my daughter does when we take her to school. 66 degrees on saturday. 67 degrees on sunday. so i hope that holds because that will be real nice. >> i hope so. >> the best of fall weather. >> wouldn't that have been funny if will would have come in there and did an rg3 landover leap into you guys. >> we probably would have fallen over. so i'm glad you didn't. >> mr. bruce jenner off camera wouldn't have liked that. >> maybe next time. >> thank you. >> white house party crasher turned reality tv star mikhail salahi engaged to neal shawn. he proposed in baltimore, got down on a knee, popped the question and they made national headlines last fall after her husband reported she was kidnapped but she left her husband to join shawn on tour. >> shawn is about as thrilled to read that story to you as i

i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. [ male announcer ] president obama says he's creating jobs, but he's really creating debt. the facts are clear. obama's four deficits are the four largest in us history. he's adding almost as much debt as all 43 previous presidents -- combined. and over 30 cents of every dollar obama spends is borrowed. much of it from countries like china. he's not just wasting money, he's borrowing it and then wasting it. we can't afford four more years.
